Vintage Hand-Painted Porcelain Dutch Girl Figurine — Blue Bonnet & Red Clogs, Made in Japan

Circa 1950s–1960s

Mid-Century Japanese Export — Dutch Folk Theme

This petite figurine is a product of Japan’s post-war porcelain export industry, which flourished in the 1950s and 1960s. Japanese workshops produced vast quantities of decorative figurines for the American and European markets, with Dutch-themed figures among the most popular subjects. The embossed “MADE IN JAPAN” mark on the base confirms post-Occupation manufacture (pieces made during the 1945–1952 Allied Occupation were required to carry the “OCCUPIED JAPAN” mark). This particular example shows better-than-average painting quality and an unusually expressive pose.

Materials Hand-painted glazed porcelain, hollow construction
Care Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth or very soft brush. Avoid submerging in water — hand-painted decoration on vintage porcelain can be sensitive to prolonged moisture. Keep away from direct sunlight to preserve paint colors. Handle with care; hollow porcelain figurines are lightweight and fragile.

A Little Daydreamer

There is something irresistible about this figurine. She is not doing anything dramatic — no basket of flowers, no goose at her feet, no windmill in hand. She is simply standing there, chin tilted slightly upward, eyes softly closed, hands tucked behind her back, completely lost in her own small world. Maybe she is listening to something we cannot hear. Maybe she is savoring the last warm afternoon before the weather turns. Whatever the moment, the Japanese porcelain painter who brought her to life understood it perfectly.

She wears the full costume of a Dutch country girl: a pale blue bonnet framing auburn curls, a vivid green shawl fastened at the throat with a cheerful red bow, a gray-blue dress or apron, and — the detail that really makes her — a pair of bright red-orange klompen, the traditional wooden clogs of the Netherlands. The colors are surprisingly vivid for a piece of this age, each shade applied with a steady, sure hand over a smooth porcelain glaze.

About These Figurines

In the decades following World War II, Japanese porcelain workshops produced an enormous variety of small decorative figurines for the American and European export market. Dutch-themed figures — boys and girls in traditional costume — were perennial favorites, reflecting the long-standing Western fascination with Holland's windmills, tulips, and cheerful folk dress.

These pieces ranged from simple, almost crude souvenirs to surprisingly refined little character studies. This figurine falls into the latter category. The painting is careful, the expression is distinctive, and there is a personality to her that transcends the genre.

The embossed "MADE IN JAPAN" mark on the base places this piece in the post-Occupation era, likely from the 1950s or early 1960s. (Figurines produced during the Allied Occupation from 1945 to 1952 were required to be marked "MADE IN OCCUPIED JAPAN," making the dating relatively straightforward.)
