Condition
Good vintage condition. No chips, cracks, or repairs. Bold colors remain vivid — the red bow, blue sleeves, and green garland all read clearly. Some minor paint thinning and wear on the yellow bodice and base areas, consistent with age and handling. Small surface marks on the hair. Hand-painted facial details are well-preserved with good color and definition. "JAPAN" mark on the back is fully legible. Sew holes at the base are intact and unobstructed.Vintage Porcelain Half-Doll — Colorful Rococo Lady with Tall Sculpted Hair, Pincushion Figurine, Japan

Interwar Japanese Export Porcelain, Rococo Revival Half-Doll
This half-doll bears a dark "JAPAN" stamp on the back — the country-of-origin mark required by U.S. customs law after 1921. The simple "JAPAN" wording (rather than the later "Made in Japan" that became standard after World War II) places her firmly in the interwar period. Japanese porcelain studios produced enormous quantities of half-dolls for the American market during these decades, often working from European fashion plates or pattern books.
What makes this piece exceptional is the boldness of its palette. Where most half-dolls favor soft pastels or monochrome white, this one is vivid and unapologetic — yellow bodice, prominent red bow, green garland, blue puffed sleeves, white neckline edged in red. The towering Rococo-inspired sculpted hairstyle adds dramatic height, its auburn curls cascading past both shoulders in a form that traces directly to eighteenth-century French court style, filtered through decades of decorative tradition to arrive at a small Japanese porcelain factory. The "arms in" pose is standard for Japanese manufacture; the color work is anything but.
