Cobalt Blue Aventurine Art Glass Vase -- 15" Hand-Blown Murano-Style Statement Vase

Late 20th Century

Hand-Blown Art Glass, Murano Aventurine Tradition

From a collector's estate in Hobbesville, North Carolina, this cobalt blue vase stopped us in our tracks. Fifteen inches tall, teardrop form, hand-blown cased glass with copper aventurine inclusions that catch the light like sparks suspended in deep blue water. The woman who owned it had worked in high-end jewelry for years and knew what she was looking at when she brought this home. You can tell by what she kept.

The technique is Murano-style — cased glass with that characteristic depth of color you get when one layer of molten glass is gathered over another. The polished concave pontil on the base is a mark of careful finishing. It's unsigned, but the craftsmanship speaks to the Italian glassblowing tradition, and it speaks fluently. This is a statement piece in the truest sense. It doesn't need a shelf full of company.

Materials Hand-blown cased art glass in deep cobalt blue with copper aventurine inclusions, polished concave pontil mark on base, natural air bubbles throughout
Care Hand wash only with lukewarm water and mild soap if needed. Dry with a soft, lint-free cloth. Do not place in the dishwasher. The polished pontil is smooth and will not scratch surfaces, but the weight of the piece — substantial for its size — warrants a stable display surface. If using as a flower vase, change water regularly to prevent mineral deposits at the waterline. Avoid abrasive cleaners.

There is something almost hypnotic about aventurine glass. The technique -- born on the island of Murano in the early 17th century -- involves suspending tiny copper crystals within molten glass, then cooling the piece slowly to let those particles catch and hold the light. The result is a warm, glittering shimmer that seems to come from deep within the glass itself, like embers scattered beneath still water. This vase is a beautiful example of that tradition. Standing a commanding 15 inches tall, it takes the form of an elongated teardrop -- full and rounded at the base, tapering gracefully toward a softly narrowed opening. The glass is a deep, saturated cobalt blue, richly layered through the cased glass technique where multiple layers of molten glass are gathered and blown together. Suspended within those layers, the copper aventurine inclusions sweep diagonally through the body in broad, gestural strokes, catching light in warm rose-gold and copper tones that contrast beautifully against the cool blue depths. Turn the vase and the effect shifts. In bright light, the aventurine flares with warmth. In softer light, the cobalt deepens to near-black and the copper becomes a subtle inner glow. This play of color and light is what makes aventurine glass so enduringly collectible -- and why no two pieces ever look quite the same. The base reveals a polished concave pontil mark, a hallmark of hand-blown production. Natural air bubbles and slight organic variations in the glass walls confirm this was shaped by human hands, not a mold. The piece is unmarked, but the materials, technique, and form are consistent with Murano-tradition art glass production, likely dating to the latter half of the 20th century. At this size, the vase makes an immediate impression -- on a console table, a mantel, a dining room sideboard, or standing alone as sculptural art. It is equally striking filled with long-stemmed branches, dried florals, or pampas grass.
