1970s Porcelain / Ceramic Very Good
HDRP-VR-0030
A matched pair of green ceramic candlestick holders, hand-glazed and signed on the base by their maker: "Laurie 73." That's the good part. These were poured, glazed, fired, and proudly signed in a home studio in 1973 — and here they still are, together, all these years later. Highlights & Details:
  • Set of 2 — same mold, same glaze, same signature on both
  • Glossy avocado green, with darker glaze pooled in the fluted foot for real depth in the ribs
  • Urn-shaped candle cup on a flared pedestal and square slab base
  • Each holds a standard taper candle
  • Approx. 3" x 3" base, 3.5" tall
  • Hand-incised "Laurie 73" on each base — signed and dated by the maker
Condition: Very Good. The gloss glaze is bright and intact — no chips, no cracks to the cups or rims. A light scatter of tiny kiln specks on the undersides marks these as the real, hand-fired thing, and the pair displays beautifully as a matched set.

Pair of Green Ceramic Candlestick Holders — Signed "Laurie" & Dated 1973 Studio Pottery

1973

Signed Studio Pottery

Both bases are hand-incised in flowing cursive: "Laurie 73." A maker named Laurie poured this pair from a mold, glazed them in glossy avocado green, fired them, and signed and dated her work in 1973 — the kind of home-studio ceramics that flourished in classes and basement kilns across America that decade. The darker glaze pooled in the fluted foot and the matching signature on both pieces mark them as a true, hand-finished pair rather than anything off a factory line.

They came to us from a North Carolina estate whose keeper had a genuine love of pottery — the sort of collector who kept the signed and dated pieces, the ones with a maker's hand still on them. That eye is why a small, honest pair like this survived intact and together for more than fifty years. We have not identified Laurie beyond her first-name signature, and we make no claim to a pottery house — the value here is exactly what you can see: a matched, signed, dated studio pair.

Materials Poured-mold ceramic, hand-glazed in glossy avocado green with darker glaze pooled in the fluted foot. Hand-incised maker's signature on each square base.
Care Dust with a soft, dry cloth. Wipe away any wax residue gently while slightly warmed. Avoid soaking, abrasive cleaners, and sudden temperature changes to protect the vintage glaze.

Turn one of these over and you'll find the whole story on the bottom: "Laurie 73," incised by hand in flowing cursive. Somebody named Laurie made these two candlestick holders in 1973 — poured them from a mold, glazed them in this glossy avocado green, fired them, and thought enough of the result to sign her name. This is the kind of work that came out of the home ceramics studios that were everywhere in that era, and it has a warmth that mass production never quite manages. The form is a classic — an urn-shaped candle cup rising from a fluted, flared pedestal foot, all set on a neat square base. The glaze is where it earns a second look. It's a bright avocado green, and in the incised ribs of the foot the darker glaze has pooled and settled, so the flutes read with real depth instead of lying flat. Little touches like that are what separate a signed studio piece from something off a factory line. And it's a true pair. Same mold, same glaze, same hand, same "Laurie 73" on both bases. That matters — matched sets have a way of drifting apart over fifty years, and these two stayed together. They came to us from a North Carolina estate whose keeper had a real love of pottery. You can tell by what got kept: not just the pretty things, but the signed and dated ones, the pieces with a maker's hand still on them. That's a collector's eye, and it's the reason a small, honest, hand-finished pair like this survived intact to reach you. Details:
