Wedgwood Wild Strawberry Bone China Trinket Dish — Scalloped Oval Pin Tray with Gilt Rim, England

Circa 1970s

Botanical Floral Bone China

Wedgwood introduced Wild Strawberry in 1965, and it quickly became one of the English house's most beloved and collected patterns — a single sprig of wild strawberries, green-and-tan leaves, and fine trailing gilt vines on bright bone china. This little scalloped oval dish carries that design at trinket size, its reverse marked with the black Portland Vase stamp, "Bone China," "Made in England," the pattern name, and a hand-painted "71."

It came to us from an estate in Youngsville, North Carolina, assembled by a collector with a fine eye for small, well-chosen things. A dish like this was always a modest English luxury — the kind kept on a dresser or nightstand to hold a ring at the end of the day. Sixty years on, Wild Strawberry is still in production and still sought after, and a bright, unworn example like this one carries all of that quiet appeal.

Materials English bone china with a fired gilt (gold) rim and the Wild Strawberry botanical decoration, made by Wedgwood in England.
Care Hand wash only in warm water with a mild soap. Avoid the dishwasher and microwave to protect the gilt rim. Dry with a soft cloth; keep out of prolonged direct sun.

Some patterns earn their keep. Wedgwood introduced Wild Strawberry in 1965, and sixty years on it's still one of the house's most collected designs — the kind of thing people build a table around and then hunt down the small pieces to match. This is one of those small pieces: a scalloped oval dish, barely four and a half inches across, with a single strawberry sprig sitting dead center. The drawing is the whole charm. Red berries, leaves in green and a soft tan, and those fine gilt vines that trail off toward the edge like the plant kept growing after the painter stopped. The scalloped rim is finished with a band of gold. It's a lot of detail for such a little thing, which is rather the point — this was always meant to be a small English luxury, the sort that lived on a dresser or a nightstand and held a wedding ring while its owner slept. Flip it over and Wedgwood tells you exactly what you've got: the black Portland Vase mark, "Bone China," "Made in England," and "Wild Strawberry" spelled right out, with a hand-painted "71" for good measure. So we can say it plainly — this is genuine English bone china, not porcelain, not a lookalike. It came to us from an estate in Youngsville, North Carolina, out of a collection put together by someone with a fine eye. That reads clearly in a piece like this. Small, specific, well-chosen. A note on size, because it matters: this is a trinket dish, a pin tray. It's for rings, earrings, cufflinks, a stray button — not for serving. Buy it knowing it's small, and it'll charm you exactly as intended. The Details
