Hand-Painted China
Some things are signed the way you'd sign a letter — quietly, at the end, once the work is done. Turn this little porcelain dish over and you'll find it: "Peta Siegal," and the year, 1969, in dark script on the foot. We don't know her beyond that name and that date, and we won't invent the rest. We don't need to. Painting china was one of the quiet arts of the last century — a person at a table by a window, a fine brush, one petal at a time. The wild rose across the rim, the blue forget-me-nots, the small human wobble in the shading all say the same thing: a real hand made this, and was proud enough to put a name to it.
It comes to us from the estate of a woman now in her nineties, lately of Durham and, before that, the Philadelphia area. She came through Ellis Island as a girl and spent a long life with a good eye, gathering small, well-made ceramics across Philadelphia and New Jersey. This dish was among them, kept and valued for years. The collection is the context; the signature is the anchor. A name, a year, a flower painted by hand — that's a person reaching across more than fifty years to set something down where you'll find it.
