HDRV-VR-0027
A hand-shaped Finnish art-glass vase from Muurla, mouth-blown into that unmistakable handkerchief form — a wide, wavy rim that flares like a scarf caught mid-fall. The satin-frosted surface washes from a soft periwinkle blue up into lavender at the ruffled edge, and at a full 12" tall it stands well above the usual six-to-eight-inch examples. A true statement piece, and one of a kind, since every one of these is shaped by hand.
  • Maker: Muurla, Finland — confirmed by the printed maker's mark on the base
  • Form: hand-shaped handkerchief (fazzoletto) vase, pinched square base rising to an open ruffled mouth
  • Glass: mouth-blown, satin/frosted matte finish; periwinkle blue blushing to lavender-mauve at the rim
  • Size: 12" tall, about 7" across the mouth — notably large for the form
  • Era: contemporary Finnish studio art glass
  • Provenance: from a treasured estate in Hobbsville, North Carolina
Condition: Excellent throughout the body and rim — no chips, no cracks, color rich and even. Some minor satin-finish flaking on the concealed underside, which never shows in display. Display-ready and lovely.

Muurla Finland Handkerchief Art Glass Vase — 12" Mouth-Blown Satin Periwinkle-to-Lavender Ruffled Vase

Contemporary (late 20th–early 21st c.)

Finnish Studio Art Glass — Handkerchief Form

The collector whose estate this comes from, in Hobbsville, North Carolina, was a collector in the truest sense. Her home held vases, curios, figurines, and pottery gathered patiently over the years, but glass was her real love — the thing she reached for, studied, and carried home when she found the right piece. This mouth-blown vase from Muurla, Finland is exactly that kind of find. It takes a collector's eye to spot Finnish studio glass and know it's worth the space on the shelf. She did, and it stayed with her.

Muurla has blown art glass in its small Finnish village since 1974, and this is the handkerchief form the studio is known for — a vessel shaped entirely by hand while the glass is still soft, so the wide rim ripples and folds like fabric caught mid-fall. No two are alike. This one carries a satin, frosted finish and a soft periwinkle blue that blushes into lavender toward the ruffled edge, with the maker's printed mark on the base to name its maker plainly. At a full twelve inches, it stands taller than most examples of its kind. It survived a collector's decades of care in fine shape, and it's ready for its next set of hands.

Materials Mouth-blown art glass with a satin, frosted finish; periwinkle blue blushing to lavender at the ruffled rim. Printed Muurla maker's mark on base.
Care Dust with a soft, dry cloth. Wash by hand in lukewarm water if needed; avoid abrasives, which can dull the satin finish. Handle the ruffled rim gently and display away from hard knocks.

The collector whose estate this comes from had an eye for glass. Her home in Hobbsville, North Carolina came to us full of the things a real collector gathers over a lifetime — vases, curios, figurines, pottery — but it was the glassware she clearly loved most. You could see it in what she chose. And a mouth-blown piece from Muurla, Finland is exactly the kind of thing a true glass collector spots across a room and takes home. Muurla has been blowing art glass in its namesake Finnish village since 1974, and this is the handkerchief form the studio is known for — fazzoletto, if you want the Italian word for it. The whole vessel is shaped by hand while the glass is still soft, so the rim ripples and folds like fabric caught in the middle of falling. No two come out the same. This one wears a satin, frosted finish rather than a glossy one, and the color does something quietly beautiful: a soft periwinkle blue across the body that blushes up into lavender and mauve toward the ruffled edge. The base carries Muurla's printed mark — the multicolor arc over "muurla FINLAND" — so there's no guesswork about who made it. What sets this one apart is the scale. Most Muurla handkerchief vases you'll find run six to eight inches. This one stands a full foot tall, roughly seven inches across at the open mouth. It's a statement, and it reads that way on a table, a mantel, or a windowsill where the light can move through it.
  • Maker: Muurla, Finland (est. 1974) — confirmed by the printed maker's mark on the base
  • Form: hand-shaped handkerchief / fazzoletto vase; pinched square base rising to an open, wavy ruffled rim
  • Glass & technique: mouth-blown art glass with a satin/frosted matte surface
  • Color: soft periwinkle-cornflower blue blushing to lavender-mauve at the rim and upper edges
  • Size: 12" tall, approximately 7" across the mouth — large for the form
  • Era: contemporary Finnish studio art glass
  • Provenance: from a treasured estate in Hobbsville, North Carolina
Condition: The body and ruffled rim are excellent — no chips, no cracks, the rim fully intact, the color rich and even. The satin finish on the underside shows some minor loss and flaking, the ordinary result of a matte-surface piece being set down over the years; it sits entirely on the concealed base and never shows in display. A previous owner added small clear adhesive bumper feet to the base to protect surfaces — leave them or lift them off, your call. Display-ready and beautiful, with wear confined to the underside.
