Wheaton Glass Corn Salt & Pepper Shakers — Emerald "Old Doc's Celebrated Cure" Novelty Bottles, Pair

Vintage · circa 1960s–1970s

Figural Novelty Salt & Pepper

These whimsical shakers are the work of Wheaton Glass of Millville, New Jersey — a major name in American glassmaking. Through the 1960s and '70s Wheaton produced whole runs of reproduction novelty bottles: mock bitters, cures, and apothecary miniatures made for collectors who liked a wink on the shelf. This pair is molded as ears of corn in emerald glass, each bottle dressed as a patent-medicine remedy — one face embossed "Old Doc's Celebrated Cure," the other "Old Fashion Maize Concoction." Turn them over and you'll find "WHEATON N.J." in the base. They were made in quantity, so this is good country-kitchen fun rather than rare treasure.

They came to us from a collector in Wake Forest, North Carolina — a writer by trade, the sort who keeps the good odd things — who held onto them for many years before downsizing for a move back north to Long Island. They've clearly been a small daily pleasure for a long while, and they're ready to bring the same tongue-in-cheek charm to a new kitchen shelf.

Materials Emerald-green pressed glass molded as ears of corn, with white perforated plastic shaker caps; bases embossed "WHEATON N.J."
Care Hand-wash the glass in warm, soapy water and dry by hand; keep the perforated caps dry between uses and store the pair away from hard knocks.

Somebody at Wheaton Glass had a sense of humor, and I'm glad they did. This pair of salt and pepper shakers is molded as two ears of corn — rows of kernels, husk leaves folded back along the sides — in a green that lands somewhere between emerald and lime depending on how the light hits it. Charming enough on their own. Then you turn one and read the small print. Each bottle is dressed up as a patent-medicine cure, the kind a fellow in a checkered coat would sell off the back of a wagon. One face is embossed "Old Doc's Celebrated Cure." The opposite face promises an "Old Fashion Maize Concoction." Whatever Old Doc was peddling, I suspect it worked best taken with supper — these are functional shakers, white perforated caps and all, ready for the salt and the pepper. They're the work of Wheaton Glass of Millville, New Jersey, a name worth knowing in American glassmaking. In the 1960s and '70s Wheaton turned out whole runs of these whimsical reproduction bottles — mock bitters, cures, and apothecary miniatures — for people who liked a little wink on the shelf. Flip them over and you'll find "WHEATON N.J." embossed right in the base. They were made in quantity, so this is country-kitchen fun rather than rare treasure, and priced to match. That's exactly the appeal. These came to us from a collector in Wake Forest, North Carolina — a writer by trade, the sort who keeps the good odd things — who held onto them for many years before downsizing for a move back north to Long Island. They've been somebody's small daily pleasure for a long while. Easy to see why.
